Charge Offs HELP PLEASE!!!

I am a little confused about charge off's. My husband has a couple of charge offs (I am assuming) on his credit report. He doesn't want to actually get the credit report until we are fully able to deal with the problem(i.e. after my debt is paid off)But 7 1/2 years ago there were several (4ish) credit cards that were completely ignored. I have been reading in different sources that are stating that even after the 7 years plus 180 days these can still haunt you forever as charge off's never go away. Is this true? Also is he still responsible for paying this debts even though they would supposedly be taken off of his report? I have heard that even if they are taken off, you still owe this money and this can harm you when you begin to buy a house. Please help me try and understand this. My credit is strong, but not strong enough to get a house on my own, which is my goal at this time.
