Fran,

Anytime you contact a collector/creditor, you should know what your options are both legally and financially. Not knowing this information can seriously put you at a disadvantage. As a former collection agent, I can tell you we always were in the "driver's seat" because we knew all the pertainent information when clients called.

First, pull your credit reports(all 3), and dispute anything that has been over 7 years old. Dispute them with a letter stating exactly that. The credit bureau is obligated to the consumer in that it must further investigate your dispute to either validate the account or remove it if insufficient information cannot be found.
