Collection account

I have an account in a collection service. I disputed the debt with the credit bureau (TransUnion-the only one it was listed with)and it came back "verified." I had written in my dispute letter to TransUnion: "Please provide me with copies of all information attained, including copies of any documents bearing my signature." TransUnion sent me nothing but an updated credit report showing that the account was verified 8/01 (this account was opened in 1997). Is the credit bureau required to provide me with signed documents, etc, or can they just "verify" that the collection agency's computer says I owe them money? I don't remember getting anything from the collection agency (I am assuming that they sent me something at a previous address), but...is the collection agency required to provide me with proof of the debt even though I didn't respond within the 30 day period mentioned in the fair debt collection practices act? "(b) If the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period described in subsection (a) that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, or that the consumer requests the name and address of the original creditor, the debt collector shall cease collection of the debt, or any disputed portion thereof, until the debt collector obtains verification of the debt or any copy of a judgment, or the name and address of the original creditor, and a copy of such verification or judgment, or name and address of the original creditor, is mailed to the consumer by the debt collector. " I am wondering what my next step should be (or could be) since I do not feel this debt should be my responsibility. Is anybody required to provide me with proof that this is my debt? Thank you.
