How to file a lien?

Just curious if this is possible, or if I am *out of luck* due a verbal-only "contract". My former employer was in the process of selling his business. He asked that I stay aboard until the last day, and promised, in return, a 6-month severance payment. I stayed with him, and due to this, turned down good job offers. Now, I am employed elsewhere, but I do see my former employer from time to time. He always says that I will definitely receive my severance "once some financial problems are cleared up". I heard today that his assets are being auctioned. Do I have any recourse, being that our severance discussion was verbal? Is it possible for me to file a lien against him based on our verbal "contract"? Any suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated. This is in the State of New Hampshire. Thank you
