Johnny,

Your wife's score is good enough, yours is a tad low for the very best rates. Recent lates (within 2 years) will knock your score down. I would suggest you talk to a mortgage broker who specializes in helping people with credit problems. But I am not sure you will need the 20% down - there are a lot of good programs available for first time buyers, and interest rates are really really low right now. Not every mortgage broker will want to help you - find one that will. They can look at your reports and tell you exactly what you need to do.

I'm not really an expert in mortgage loans, and don't feel all that qualified to give you any specific advice.
