Can I fight this?

I have a charged-off credit card account on my credit report, which I believe is still owned by the original creditor. The charged-off amount was about $5,000, and the charge-off occurred in 1994. The entry had been on my report as stated above since 1994. However, within the last year, the amount listed as "past due" on the account has increased from $5,000 to over $11,000, even though the charged off amount remains the same. The account has been closed since 1994. Is this increase legal?
