I paid my debt and have proof - lender says I still owe.

I had a loan with a finance company that went delinquent and I was assigned to a collection agency. I paid my debt in full and received notarized documents stating the same from their collection attorney. After 4 years I decided to sell my motorcycle but I couldn't find the title. I applied for a lost title and the DMV said the finance company still has a lien. I've contacted them numerous times trying to get this resolved. I have heard all kinds of things such as:

- We can't find you in our computer system.
- We don't have this on record.
- You still owe us $1,800.00 but can't say what for.
- They have asked for my documentation. After I sent it they have not replied

Basically, my credit has been screwed up for 4 years because of this and it still is. I have paid thousands in high interest rates due to their negligence. They won't send me proof or documentation and they won't contact me. If I am correct in all of this is the finance company responsible for the damage that has been done or is that just life?
