My guess is they're bluffing, that this is considered uncollectible, has been sold as such. However, it is just a guess, I am not a lawyer.
You should get legal advice from an attorney who is familiar with the courts there.

Do not talk to them at all until you have spoken with a lawyer, you could get yourself in trouble by saying the wrong thing.
