The 3 yr SOL applies. To see when the SOL starts, and the applicable interest rate, go to http://www.lawdog.com, select your state.

They would take you to court in MD. They would have to serve you with a summons. If this debt is past the SOL they can still take you to court, but if you show up and present the SOL as your defense, they cannot get a judgment against you.

Were you really late? If you were not late and you have proof, that is another story.

After 7 yrs it will fall off your credit report, but then the collection agencies will start, because these debts are sold and re-sold, so yu will have to deal with each collection agency, and monitor your credit reports and dispute each time.

Learn the FCRA and FDCPA, keep good records, and hope that someone breaks the law big time (they do, all the time) and then sue them to get rid of them permanently.
