Something tells me you are leaving out a few facts.
Did they cosign a loan or credit card for you? Were you a minor and needed medical care and they signed as the responsible party? Did they sign anything that allowed you to receive some sort of goods or services and they assumed ultimate responsibility for the bill?
If any of this happened, why are you surprised? You need to figure out a way to pay this yourself.
