debts from old divorces of my today husband

Please, can I ask you and please :explain me one way:
who is responsible now when I was married for oldest debts of my husband, he has debts from oldest divorce, he has debts by taxes. I didn't know real picture, now I am. Can I buy the car or move by ovw life and not be responsible for this oldest debts?
Please, help me to understand the situation.
Because until I have not a car, I can't try to find the job.
