I would still send them a certified RRR letter telling them you have no intention of paying this and that you know it is out of statute, that you do not want them contacting you any more and that if they even think about putting anything at all on your credit report you will sue them.

You can send certified RRR mail from the USPS website, you don't have to go to the post office.
