Has anyone settled a debt in turn for a better mark on report

I have heard of people agreeing to pay a debt in turn for the mark being either updated to a better standing or removed from their credit report. If this is true, does anyone know the procedures of doing this or is it just a self-induced procedure? Meaning, I would just make up the stipulations myself and see if they go for it? Any advise would be great. I am in the position now that there is not much in it for me to pay off my debts just for a paid mark which isn't much better than an unpaid mark. My balances aren't high enough for anyone to really try to garnish or sue although, I realize this is a possibility.
