It's tricky. You want to make it clear that you do not acknowledge the debt as belonging to you, and your offer to settle is purely an attempt to get this off your credit reports, no other reason.

Type up a "contract" for them to sign and return to you and send it with a letter saying you will pay them once they have signed and returned the agreement. They will say it violates the law or some other nonsense, that's not true, they can do it if they want to.

There are some letters for this floating around on the net.
