Let me add - if the lawyer finds that the judgment is good, and can't be vacated (a lot of times they can), he/she can always negotiate the payment for you, so that you don't get trapped. That the part I said was tricky. You can make what you think is a good deal, only to have it backfire becuase they do things afterward that you don't expect.

For instance, say you negotiate to pay it off for a percentage of what they say you owe. You fulfill you part, you think it's over and done with. 3 months later another collection agency calls and you start all over.

An attorney knows this, and too many other things for Mr. Avergage Consumer to even conceive of, and can lock the deal up so they can't do any of their tricks.

And don't feel bad for getting in this situation. I have gotten emails from people you wouldn't believe!! It's astounding how many people get caught in these legal traps.
