credit report 1997

In 1997 both my husband and I were out of work. We had many debts that went as much as 4 times 60 days and several with 6 times 30 days late. We DID pay off every debt after we went back to work. I pulled a credit report in 4-01 and all these debts are on there. How long will these debts show up? Why does it show updated report as recent as 3/01 on these debts. Some of these debts are from Mississippi we moved to Missouri that is how we were without work. Is there anything I can do? Thank you.
