All I can tell you is that I had the exact same thing happen to me this week. Not only did a collection from Gulf State for ATT, in the amount of $89.00 show up on my report... one for 356.00 showed up on my husband's! The thing is, we have never even lived in an area that offers ATT broadband service. I called ATT yesterday and verified that they have never heard of me. My course of action thusfar has been to bypass these creeps all together. I filed a dispute with Equifax, and told them to investigate. The end result should be that it's removed. The law states that the collection agency has to be able to *verify* the debt in order for it to legally appear on your credit report. Since I know for a fact that they will be unable to do so, since I've spoken to ATT, it shouldn't remain. The main point being, you don't have a bill with these people to begin with, so don't deal with them. It is the responsibility of the credit reporting agencies to report accurate information. If the info that is on your report now is inacurate and can't be verified, they have to remove it immediately. If they don't remove it, write or call them again and request that they get written proof from Gulf State as to the origional debt. When they can't provide it within 30 days, it will have to be removed. My experience talking to equifax was that they have no interest in us having bad credit, therefore no desire to fight us. Good Luck to us both!
