First of all, are you a joint account holder? If not, you are not responsible for the debt. Ask for a copy of an application and see if your signature is on the it.
I strongly suggest you see a lawyer about the totality of your situation. It may well be bankruptcy is in your best interest if there is a great deal of debt in your life. Pensions and Social Security can't be seized to pay debts. If you own a home, they will probably be able to place a lein against it that would have to be satisfied before you could sell or refinance.
