Why Show Up In Court?

What is the advantage of showing up in court when sued for a CC debt(s) if you owe the money? I keep reading that one should always go to court, but I don't understand the reasoning. If you owe the money, the judge will award the judgment against you whether you are present or not, i.e. isn't the outcome the same? In fact, if you go, doesn't that put you into some kind of compromise with the court to at least agree to start paying something on your debt? Can't the creditor also use that "court date" to get additonal information about you that he may othewise not be able to get? Any input is appreciated.
