There are all kinds of reasons to show up. I am mentioned this a couple of times in the last day or so. I was sued by Sears. There was a legitmate question about the statute of limitations. Sears decided to dismiss their complaint. However, had I not shown up it is quite conceivable that Sears might have won a default judgement knowing there would be no argument against their complaint.

I would not worry about having a judge arrange a payment plan. They will often do that in small claims, but it is usually at the request of the defendant. The creditor most of the time just gets a judgement. They then have to figure how to collect. It is not often that the court will be of much help to them, other than the judgement.
