It is better to show up. If it gets that far, showing up is your best choice. You can present your side of the story, if there is one, and a lot of times the judge will try to work something out that you can live with, or even dismiss in cases where you are in dire straits. The best thing to do is docment all collection attempts and catch them breaking the law (FDCPA) and then you have a good chance of getting them off your back before they ever get around to taking you to court.

An upaid judgment stays on your report a long, long time, and can be renewed in most states. And if you work, in most states they can garnish your pay, attach your bank accounts, place liens on any real estate... Fight back, any way you can.
