The bad people want to rip me off

I moved out of my apartment a year ago, I left with a normal wear and tear, they seized my $200 deposite. Later they sent me a $500 cleaning bill, I wrote them a letter to ask for the receipts, they sent me an invoice which including other apartments cleaning services, they can not explain how they came up that $500 from the invoice. Although they reduced my bill to $300, I wrote the second letter to dispute the charge because it still seemed much higher than they stated on their normal cleaning charges. I did not get any response since then. I was out of the country for a few month, after I came back, I saw a letter from collection agent asking me to pay $465 and received a lots of messages left on my answering machine from that collection agent(I believe they are!), I haven't returned any calls because I am not sure what to do next, I don't want to have bad people rip me off like that, it would even encourage them to do this to others, and it seems like I have no choice but wait until they destroy my good credit or sue me, any suggestions? what's the worst case?
