The dispute I was referring to is the typical dispute with a credit reporting agency - like "this account is not mine" or "never paid late" to try to get derogatory entries removed from one's credit preort. If you dispute item, do not make untrue statements. It is fraud. Dispute details, dates, whatever, and be vague if you want to imply it isn't true when it is, or you can get yourself in trouble. There is a big difference between "This account is not mine." and "I don't recall missing these payments; this can't be right."

In your case, where the couseling service screwed up your accounts, you should contact your state's attorney general. You can also file complaints with the FTC and the BBB. People are led to believe that they are saving their credit "reputation," when it is being ruined behind their backs; and many of these companies have even taken the money and never paid the debts or paid very little. There are people who have gone through several years of credit counseling, paid thousands of dollars, and are worse off than if they had just stopped paying or taken bk.

I am all for bringing these companies under much more stringent regulation and forcing them to disclose what is actually going to happen to a person's credit when they do this. Most people have no idea.
