Help: What Should I do?

I am terminally ill and have been permanently disabled since the beginning of this year. My only income is SSI. I have no other assets or income. Apart from my illness, which is truly a horrible experience, my financial situation is a disaster. I am eating thanks to food stamps. I owe around 60K on credit cards. Needless to say, I'm receiving many threatening letters.

Two different legal aid attorneys have advised against filing for bankruptcy and have basically told me not to worry about my creditors. They have written cease and desist letters specifying that I'm disabled to my original creditors, which worked, but I am now receiving letters from third party collectors as most the debts have been charged off. My medical situation is truly a bad one; I am not faking to avoid paying my bills.

What can I do to take matters into my own hands without causing a big mess barring the filing of bankruptcy? Should I write the collectors myself and threaten to sue them with some invented reason. How can I defend myself if legal aid doesn't recommend bankruptcy--in fact they are against it in my case? What can someone do to fight off the sharks.
