I have about $40,000 in credit card debt. Also about $1500 in other debt such as utilities, fees, and other debt. Plus I have about $50,000 student loan debt (which is not really what I'm worried about - I know bankruptcy usually doesn’t cover that). The combination of the 2 types of debt though is what has got be thinking about declaring bankruptcy. I got behind when I became temporarily disabled last November. I could pay my bills up until March of this year but after that I ran out of savings and couldn't pay anything. I couldn't work because I was sick/disabled. I just started temping this past week (November 5th) since plans to go back to school next year prevent me from getting permanent employment. I was going to do a debt management program. ($900/mo until 2006) However, I don't think I can commit to that since 1) temp work is not guaranteed 2) the illness I had can get pretty severe and it's not guaranteed that I won't get ill like that again for months at a time 3) When/if I do enter grad school next August, it will be near impossible to make payments of $900/mo - and that amount is actually pretty good considering my debt, but I just can't keep those payments up for long Is a good option to ignore all that debt? Or will the creditors likely try to garnish my future wages? (which would be made between now and Aug. 2002, then on summer/Christmas breaks from grad school, and then also after I graduate in 2004 and get a full time job) Am I likely to get sued? The only thing to my name is a car almost 15 years old which isn't worth much. I reside in Ohio. My last payments to the credit card companies were made in March of this year.
