For a variety of reasons people get into debt they can't handle. The purpose of this forum, it seems to me, is to discuss how to handle that situation after it arises. There are other forums that discuss how to avoid such circumstances, and most of us could use some of that advicem (actually could have used it some time ago). However I think most debtors are just not familiar with how collections work. I urge anyone who is approached by a third party collection agency to simply refuse to do business with them. I don't suggest that you not attempt to pay your debt, just insist on paying it to the original creditor. Unless the collection agency actually "owns" the debt, you are never obligated to speak to them. Just tell them, in writing, to stop all communication with you. This doesn't get rid of the debt (you should still resolve it), but you can rid yourself of their tactics.
