Give it a try. Some card companies are willing to help you when you have gotten in over your head. Many of them are quite generous when you demonstrate integrity and a willingness to pay. Some are not, but more are coming around since the laws affecting how they calculate their losses have changed. I know a couple of companies that now have newly formed departments to handle hardhsip situations.

Most likely, they would not remove derogatory information until after the fact, but I know of cases where AmEx and Citibank have done exactly that, and even given the person a second chance by extending credit on favorable terms after the debt has been paid.
