Credit cards owned by both husband and wife

Have a friend in Kentucky with a credit card jointly with husband, they are co-owners. He has left her; she called the credit card issuer to have her name removed from the card and was told she couldn't. Is this correct? If so, how does she get rid of the obligation should he decide to start running up the balance? She doesn't want to be responsible for paying for his new girlfriend! Would appreciate any help.
