Gulf state credit reporting seven year old debt as current?

I recieved a bill from gulf state back in July saying they own this collection account from 5/94 and they enclosed a form giving me the opportunity to dispute the fact that it was my account, which I signed and mailed disputing the fact that i ever owned the account. Recently i pulled my Experian and equifax reports and they show the account as open with last activity in 11/96 and currently past due. I am a California resident and I have old copies of credit reports showing the original dates and so forth. After reading many posts about the horrors of dealing with gulf state I am looking for any ideas for the quickest and easiest resolution of this. The original collection account was scheduled to be dropped from my report on 10/01. Any suggestions? Thanks
