The JC Penney account's importance will fade with time. I wouldn't close it, I would use it, and call them and ask them to change the statuts on your credit report - after all you are a good customer who just had a problem for a couple of months.

Re the hospital bill - since it was in 98 contact the hospital administrator and make a deal with them - you will pay, they take it back from the collection agency and take it off your reports. If they try to tell you this is illegal, it is not. They want the money, you have it, pay them on your terms. Often the first attempt does not work, but stand your ground, and make sure they know you have the money and always intended to pay the bill, they are the ones who screwed up and now you are having to pay for it with higher interest rates. Go back over all the confusion that surrounded the billing. Believe me this happens all the time. I am always helping people with inaccurate medical billing problems.

If they will not deal after several attempts, email me or post again, and I will help you deal with the collection agency.
