Charged for purchases after closing account

Linda, can you give me some insight? Last March I shopped at a designer clothing outlet and purchased approximately 500.00 worth of clothing. At that time I opened up a store credit card and made the payment on that card. I never received a bill and decided to call the company about a month later. They told me I hadn't received a bill because I had a zero balance. I thought, okay, if this doesn't change, I will close the credit card account and I just got lucky. Well, I called two months later for a balance on my account and it was still zero, so I closed it. Eight months later, today, I received a notice saying that they recently found that I had charges I owed them and they would like me to pay the balance in full. Do I have any recourse?
