Well, I think that if you owe the money, and you can pay it, you should. But since they made a really big boo boo, I would be very careful how I went about it.

Ask them to send you a letter stating their error, and the amount that you owe. Tell them that you don't believe that you should pay any interest because when you tried to pay it, they said you had zero balance, and you want to make sure that there are no further errors.

That is really freaky!

But, if these folks were good enough to say they made a mistake, give them a break. They could have taken that record of your charges and sold it to a collection agency, and put you through credit hell, and you would have had to go to court to make them stop. They didn't do that. You are fortunate. What company is this BTW?

I really don't think you should take advantage of people's mistakes, in general - I hope I don't sound like that. In the consumer issues of credit reporting and collection agency trickery (and we all know it is just that, in many cases) it's "do or be done." But not day-to-day, real, human mistakes. When they say "we made a mistake" you should do the honorable thing. What goes around comes around, and you don't want that. No bad karma, right?

Linda
