Paid collections vs. unpaid debt

Hello, I have a question. I am trying to rebuild my credit and I am doing well with the exception of a couple of accounts in collections. Over the past few months, I have been paying old debts that have gone to collections and I have only 2 more left. While paying old debt off, I have also re-established some new, but have noticed no significant change in my score. Is there a difference in paying off a collection account or not paying it off. These are very old accounts, but I am just wondering should I be applying the money to more recently incurred debt?
