charge off settlement

Hello,
WOuld you mind telling me what the procedure is for working with a creditor to settle a charge off? My bank has asked that I pay off the debt, but I do not have the $$. Also, can they legally put the debt back on my credit for another 7 years? It has been almost seven now.
