Credit Company Charge Off and Collection Company Trying to Collect?

Hello, I have a quick question for anyone who might know the answer. I have a credit card that was "charged off" by the credit card company. I haven't heard anything from them since 1996. Then, all of a sudden two days ago I started getting phone calls from a collection agency trying to collect the debt! Is this possible??
