ex went bankrupt on me

My ex went bankrupt on me in 1996 but tech quit paying several years b/4 that. Because of my job and the fact I didn't know you could block bankruptcy on ex I kept all the bills and have brought the balances down, never late, made over the minimum payment, but I am still penalized. Sol in my state is 6 years plus 180 days. What I need to know is do I have to wait from his orig bankruptcy filing date or the date it was actually dismissed or can I go back to when he quit paying? This has made me a wreck and each time I think I see the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel I read something that changes the sol for me. I am so glad I came across your site after all these years. PS The ex even filed at the company I worked for. Any suggestions?
