Paying the Original Creditor

Last year I had one of my accounts with a financial institution was charged off and sold to another company. I ended up paying that second company in full for the amount owed to the original creditor. Now the original creditor is telling me I owe them a balance ($1,400). Do I still need to go back and pay them? Even though I paid the company it was charged off to.
