False Reporting to CRA

I started receiving letters from a collection agency about a student loan a person with the same name as mine took out in Colorado. My wife and I would call this collection agency and tell them it wasn't me, they would say sorry we will fix the problem. Of course 30 days later we would receive another letter and we would call and either the person didn't fix the problem or they never heard of who we had talked to.

After 4 or 5 months of this my wife talked to two rather nasty individuals, one who claimed to be a supervisor, which told my wife and then me that I was using multiple social security numbers and accuring debt. I told them I put the collection in dispute and they said they would send the information to us. I also called to follow up two weeks later and talked to another supervisor and explained the situation and he said the collection would be taken care of, that is was an obvios mistake, and nothing would be reported.

We have just received a letter denying us credit for serious delinquincy from a student loan in Colorado. Apparently the agency decided to report the erronious information anyways. I am waiting for the report from the CRA that the dispute was at. Then I will go throught the procedures of the investigation with the CRA.

I have the disputed information from the collection agency which is a person with my name but a completely different social security number.

What additional actions should I take. Should I go after the collection agency?
