auto loan fault

My son's credit is quite bad and he could not qualify for a car loan. My wife took out the loan in her name with the promise that my son would make the payments. This was done without my knowledge. Now, of course, my son has stuck us with the payments. I have paid the last 4 but I can't afford to pay any more. How much damage will be done to my credit rating if I don't make any more payments and let it be repo'd? I am at 1Giantsfans@msn.com GG
