If your lawyer is any good he/she should get you a lot more than just your lost wages for your end of the suit.Since your child's settlement will be in your control as his guardian, any bankruptcy would have a claim on that also. They can't take your van in a bankruptcy unless your equity (blue book wholesale)is over the State maximum, They can't do anything to you in a judgement unless you have told them you are waiting for $$ from a civil suit.Your rental property is safe, as you have no attachable equity, all you have to do is appear at the hearing to contest any lien.(If you are the only signer on the debts, and your property is in joint ownership, they can't do anything to you)
