paid collection agency who said they would remove me...

I recently paid a collection agency who said they would remove me if I paid them in full because of the circumstances. (I was a VOVC victim of violent crime). Basically I got jumped outside of a bar and beat up real badly and didn't pay the $. Well, they didn't remove me as they said (I know I should have got it in writing.) Is there anything I can now do?
