Technically, no, however, I find it strange that a company would be that insensitive. This can't be the first time this credit card company has dealt with this kind of situation. What company is it?

My best suggestion is to send them a statement (letter) stating the exact situation you described here, only have the statement notarized (your bank can do that for a couple of dollars) and send the letter certified return receipt mail. It will take a few days, but that is sooner than you described getting the death certificate. You might check with the phone company and get your aunt caller ID or an answering machine, at least temporarily, so she can avoid taking the calls.

If you use an answering machine, the message should just repeat the number back, not give a name, and state that calls are being screened temporarily, please leave a message. The credit card company cannot leave a message if they do not know who they are leaving it with, it's against privacy laws.

What an awful thing to have to go through. Again, please tell us which company this is, so we can avoid doing business with them.

Linda
