Could you provide some more specifics?

1) How much is the claimed original debt?
2) When do you think it became delinquent and when does the credit agency claim it became delinquent?
3) You say they served you with "papers", have they actually filed suit against you?

The statute of limitations is irrelevant if you don't respond to them in court. A debt could be 50 years old and if you don't show up in court they will get a summary judgement against you and you are up a creek.

I agree with the previous poster, they are hoping you blow off the court date and they get a summary judgment which will allow them to continue hounding you, garnish your wages, etc. regardless of whether the original debt is actually owed and regardless of whether the statute of limitations has actually run.
