Please help....my credit is depressing....

I am 25 years old, lived in GA all my life. In college 95-98, I bounced checks, overdrew account more times than I can count, still have a $1k phone bill from apt that hasn't been payed, dont know its status. No telling what all is still outstanding. Never have checked my credit, for fear of being prosecuted by law enforcement :(. I am now employed by my family investing (oddly enough) partnership for 2 years, and doing well. But I cannot get a checking account (as of last year, but i havent done anything for my credit since) or CC. Just now realizing the error of my ways, I had no idea. Very deppressing. Can anyone help? WHat should I do? I have about $2k saved that can be used to help.
