The 7 year reporting time starts with date of delinquency for debts. A bad check is a crime in most states, and it is handled differently. How many and how much money are we talking about? You can check your state's laws at http://www.lawdog.com.

You should check with the courts and see if there are any judgments against you already. Bad checks are handled mostly by chex systems and a couple of other outfits. They are credit reporting organizations and are covered by the FCRA.

The suggestion about seeing a lawyer is not a bad one. Depending on the exact situation you may be able to handle it yourself. If you want it taken care of - over with, get on with life now - the best thing to do is go on and settle up with whoever you can. If you have old docs, use them to contact the peole involved, make things right, and then start working on your credit report without fear of being chased. The seven years is not going to restart. If someone tries to re-age the debt, you can sue them and make them stop.
