Collection of late charges

Over a year ago my bank informed me that the routing and branch number on my checks was incorrect and to stop using them. They said they would send a temp supply of new checks. In the interim, the checks were sent to the wrong address and returned to the bank, causing a six-week delay. Meanwhile, my credit card payments were due, so I used the old checks to pay them to avoid late fee penalties. My bank arbitrarily, and without notification, stopped payment on the checks. This caused late fees to accrue. Only one lender refused to waive the late charge after I explained the problem so I told them to close the account. There was no balance on the account when it was closed, yet late fees were accruing every month. They are still pursuing me for payment and I have told them I will not pay over $250 in late fee penalties and will produce all necessary documentation regarding my bank's stop payment actions. I have a AAA credit rating and am not concerned about my credit history. What I am concerned about is their insistance on collecting these charges. Since the late payments were no fault of mine, I refuse to pay them. How can I resolve this problem?
