Sprint account purchased by collection agency

I recently received a letter from a collection agency stating that they bought my account from Sprint. The letter states that I owe $274; I believe this amount may come from a phone card that I had in college (1996)?? I recently (Dec 29) looked at my credit report, and this account does not show up on my credit report. The letter states that my account was purchased on Dec 17. What are your suggestions? Should I pay this amount, or should I "wait it out"?
