Don't offer them anything in terms of a dollar amount. have them make you an offer. it may turn out to less than you're actually willing to pay. remember, these companies purchase your debt for pennies on the dollar. They have tons of wiggle room. Negotiate. either way it's going to show up as a settlement on your credit. That's better than a charge off anyday, however you're going to have to suck up the negative credit rating. Keep the upper hand, find out what they are willing to settle for.
