I had a similar experience in college with a citibank visa. It went into collections and they hounded me for years. finally, I quit avoiding them and told the rep. that I really wanted to pay-off my account but I needed them to settle. We finally came to a number we could both agree upon and I sent them 10 post-dated checks for, (I don't really remember the amount anymore), I think it was for $250 and every month they would deposit a check, they would notify me first so I was always sure to have the money in the account. I'm sure they'll work with you also. Have you tried asking them to settle the account?
