settlements and taxes

I recenlty settled with first usa bank on 4500.00 of a 10000.00 credit card. They said i would have to pay taxes on it as earned income. I am ready to send in my taxes and havn't recieved anything. What happens if I go ahead and send in taxes and then i get the letter from them
